Introduction
Intellectual property management is growing in importance. Biotechnology companies have formed and prospered as a result of technology protected with patents. A strong patent estate can be translated into a technology platform that is valued in the market place. In the last 5 to 10 years, the importance of patents, copyrights, and trademarks gained more prominence as business leaders hear of the success of IBM.
For example, by proactively managing their intellectual property estate,
IBM now collects $1 billion in annual revenue.

Technology Can Provide a Revenue Stream and Assure Access to
Technology Case Study
No single business can create all the technology it needs in
today's technology rich environment. In life sciences, many core technologies must be in-licensed.
DNA Bridges®, Inc. will help organize company efforts for the best return.
ISSUE: Client was considering licensing technology from a major university. The university science was covered in pending, not issued, US patents. Client and university had different views of the technology package's value.
SOLUTION: Working with client patent counsel, DNA Bridges®, Inc. developed an assessment of the filed patents, focusing on claims and prior disclosures. A former collaborator had previously disclosed some of the science
covered in the patent applications. The inventors were not aware of this publication. DNA Bridges®, Inc. also projected the total cost of foreign filing and maintenance fees for the portfolio.
BUSINESS IMPACT: Client was able to negotiate a more favorable license with the university. The university developed a better understanding of issues to consider before investing in filing a patent application. Everyone had a better understanding of the costs associated with the deal.
